My response posted itself as I was about to elaborate!
Although I have a lot of amazingly brilliant friends, I also have had a lot of experience with people who seem, sadly, unable to really grasp what love is.
They tend to romanticise it, or exploit it for gain, or attach other needy entanglements onto it. I think this is more to do with ignorance that malicious intent, but there is a common tendency to overdo the expression of it, or to overdo the expectations of it.
Thus, my word is bathetic.
